The history of Feathers of Knysna
The history of Feathers of Knysna started way back in 1986, with
Andre and Cathy van Niekerk making their very first pair of ducks in the dining room of their home. The little home industry
was to grow at a phenomenal rate, and soon their house could no longer contain the demand on production. At the end of 1986
the operation was moved to an industrial site. The product was branded "Feathers of Knysna", and has since become an internationally
recognized symbol of the finest craft within its field.
The Van Niekerks sold the factory, which now occupies 4 industrial
sites, to the present owner in 1993.
Considered to be South Africa's finest and most collectable commercially manufactured
birds, Feathers has forged a successful path into the international market. Born out of the love of both wood and nature,
carefully orchestrated teamwork results in a product range of over 300 distinctive products, which bear the coveted Feathers
label. Being the first South African company to manufacture wooden birds on a commercial basis, and having grown exponentially,
the stringent attention to quality, materials and design have never faltered. With the advent of new materials and techniques
over the past 16 years, the products have in fact benefited, resulting in some new and innovative items that have now joined
the Feathers range.
